Happy Birthday Janis!

It’s still today here, which means it’s still Janis Joplin’s 70th birthday.  Nobody had a voice like Janis Joplin’s, and no one ever will again.  The sheer, raw emotion she conveyed is still so stunning.  If you want to see some amazing footage of Joplin, both onstage and off, watch the documentary Festival Express, which is a documentary of a train tour of Canada Joplin embarked on with The Grateful Dead and The Band (among others) in 1970.

My favorite song of hers is also the last thing she ever recorded.  (My grandma had a tape of my mom and aunt drunk off their asses singing “Mercedes Benz” at the top of their lungs.  I think she kept if for blackmail purposes.)  It sort of captures all the humor and sadness and loneliness of Janis Joplin’s singing in one short a capella tune.
