Hal David

Lyricist Had David passed away yesterday at 91.  Best known for his collaboration with Burt Bacharach, David wrote lyrics for many classic hit songs.  Reading this article about David, I was surprised to learn that he wrote the lyrics for one of my favorite 80s songs (which, okay, was a cover from the 60s), “Always Something There to Remind Me.”  Looking over the list of hits Hal David helped create, it becomes clear that he wrote sweet, gentle songs that made your heart ache just a little.  Sadness and happiness lived side by side in David’s songs, a yin-yang that acknowledges you can’t ever have one without the other.

One of Hal David’s most famous songs was “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head,” co-written with Bacharach and used rather anachronistically in the 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.  My aunt (A gigantic Paul Newman fan) lost count of how many times she saw that movie somewhere around 200.  I jokingly asked her once if she had it memorized; she offered to recite it.  As a result, “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head” was a huge part of my childhood.  It’s one of those songs that I just randomly start singing for no real reason.  Maybe because it’s one of those songs that is just so easy to hear, so free and generous, that it weaves itself into the fabric of your life without your knowledge.  If that’s what people remember most about Hal David’s songs, then that’s a pretty damn good legacy.
