Bob Casale, one of the founding members of Devo, has passed away at 61.
Yeah, Devo was kind of weird for their time. They’re kind of weird for any time; that’s what makes them so much fun. And it’s important to remember that these guys knew what they were doing. The machine-like rhythms and minimalist arrangements stripped music down to its essence, but also led to the illusion that the guys in the band weren’t doing much. What I think gets forgotten is how difficult that kind of simplicity can be. Casale’s playing wasn’t flashy, but it helped create a unique sound that was unlike anything else anyone had heard up to that point.
